OPAM studies

Short reports and risk studies under the Swiss Major Accidents Ordinance, from scenario selection to risk assessment and measures.

  • Short report and risk study
  • Consequences for the population
  • Surface water risks and ecotoxicological assessments

  • Cumulative curve and FOEN assessment criteria
  • Risk reduction measures following the ALARP principle
OPAM · Seveso III · FOEN manuals

Risk assessment

We prepare and facilitate the studies with your operations, maintenance and engineering teams, then deliver a usable report: scenarios, existing barriers and prioritised recommendations, with follow-up.

  • Preliminary hazard analysis (PHA, HAZID)
  • HAZOP, What-If and checklists
  • FMEA of critical equipment

  • Bow-tie analysis and safety barriers
  • LOPA and target safety integrity levels (SIL)
IEC 61882 (HAZOP) · IEC 61511 (SIL)

Consequence modelling

Effect distances mapped for each threshold, for toxic releases, fires and explosions, for existing facilities and at project stage.

  • Atmospheric dispersion of toxic releases
  • Toxic smoke from battery fires
  • Pool fires and jet fires
Show more (5)
  • Vapour cloud explosions and BLEVE
  • Pre-project modelling to validate a site layout
  • Assessment of ventilation discharge points and their effects
  • Indoor releases, with dilution by ventilation
  • Support for indoor ATEX zoning in specific cases

Quantitative risk assessment (QRA)

We quantify your risk in a rigorous, traceable way, to support your investment decisions, defend your case with the authority and target the measures that genuinely reduce it.

  • Cause-consequence trees (bow-tie)
  • Accident scenario frequencies
  • Individual risk and F/N curves
Show more (1)
  • Risk reduction measures following the ALARP principle

ATEX and explosion protection

Hazardous area classification, ignition source assessment and explosion protection documents.

  • Area classification to EN 60079-10-1 (gas) and EN 60079-10-2 (dust)
  • Ignition source assessment
  • Explosion protection document
EN 60079 · directives 2014/34/EU and 1999/92/EC · Suva 2153

Storage concepts

Complete concepts for chemical storage: product classification, storage rules, rooms and containment, in line with Swiss guidance and fire protection requirements.

  • Product classification and compatibility
  • Segregation, safety cabinets and storage rooms
  • Spill containment

  • Firefighting water retention
  • VKF/AEAI 26-15 hazardous substances requirements

Risk assessment

From OPAM short report to risk study

When the authority cannot rule out serious damage, the short report is followed by a risk study. Risk is then assessed on a cumulative curve, compared with the FOEN criteria.
